Solar panel

My 180 W solar panel has worked a treat putting in 4.9 Amp (especially where there has been sun).

My 2x 120Amp batteries dropped to 51% and over the day filled up to 74%.

On average I loose 10-30% running two 32L Engels, 1 as fridge (on 1 @ 4deg), the other as Freezer on 4 @ -10deg). All dependant on ambient temp.

Last night, 8 deg, Engels sucked 3%.
Other night 14 deg, 15%.

Overall we haven’t run out of fridge power between solar panel, driving car (especially the 5-7 hr trips) and staying on powered sites.

A second panel on top of the camper will definitely be another mod I need to do.

The Steca charge controller is fantastic (@$210 in Broome, you would want it to be.

Day 165, Carmila/Sun & Moon

Tonight looks like our last night in Carmila

Last night we witnessed the ‘Staircase to the moon’. It was amazing. We have seen the one in Broome bit this was totally superior.

The weather is sunny and warm during the day but the nights are becoming bitter.
Last night it dropped to 10 and we had to pull out Extra blankies and even the warm jamies. We gave the kids our new sleeping bags and took the thin old ones for us.

Day 164 Carmila & Jocks

Last night was probably the first time I wore jocks in about 150 days!

We are staying in Carmila 4 nights as it is stunning, sunny, secluded with our own private beach. But last night dropped to 12 degrees, I had to loose the board shorts and pull out the woollies.

We are starting to procrastinate driving South.

I think it will be a quick run through NSW!
It’s hard to believe we only have 16 days to go.

Day 163, Carmila

We stayed 3 nights in Alva beach, which was great, but now we have moved down.
Another 400 km or so and we have found our way to Carmila beach.

This place is truly amazing. We are literally on the beach overlooking the islands just below Hamilton island, and the best part …….. It’s free!!!

King tide tonight so we should have some good fishing tomorrow

Kids have been fighting like cat and dog. I promised them I will keep them for another week!

Photo is of what a King tide is on low tide, nothing for about a km.0

Children & +++%%$$-. Maths

Whinging score:
about doing maths and blog journal ;
1 brazillion

We have been doing maths & journals all the way. Sometimes it’s difficult as the beaches and towns are to historically rich, but I have always required the girls do updates in Pages on their iPads.

However……. There are days where I want to send them & their iPads back home! In the post, or email. (Yesterday)

If they stopped whinging & complaining for 145 minutes (remember I can be very patient, wifey requires results much quicker) they could do their 3-4 paragraphs in 10 mins.

I do have to say that once they buckle down, their descriptive writing has improved 100 fold since we left.

We are now doing almost daily entries and its no longer ‘went to beach and to playground and to shop and had dinner’ (email me if you want to read their blogs. They are secure & private so you won’t find them here)

Their blogs and web development skills have improved incredibly as have their photo & iPad skills.

Internet access in these remote places does really suck though. Uploading images/video is definitely not an option on an iPhone or even Internet cafes.

Alva beach, a billion blue soldier crabs

Day 161 Ayr

Today we visited Ayr, which is a significantly big town, with Coles, Woolies, Supercheapauto auto, Repco, a Cop shop.

We have stayed 3 nights in Alva beach, tomorrow we leave for further down south.

At the Caravan park we got a discount rate of $40 per night for 2A 2C which is pretty good for a CP. However after camping for free in so many places it does make you feel a bit ripped off! (In reality it’s great as most CPs will charge you $8-$10 per child on top of the standard $35-$40.
Big4 are the worst for over charging, especially that they are a significant distance from attractions)

We have 19 days left to do 3247 km.
We figure 170km per day on average will be a piece of cake compared to what we’ve done. We would like to spend 2-3 Nights per stay before we get to NSW. After that it will be cold and wet, we will then follow the weather .

We have our heater from Bunnings in Townsville so we should be right.

Day 160, Alva beach

Alva beach is a lovely spot about 300m from the beach. It is pretty much a fishing village with everyone having a tinnie or going fishing with hand lines or a rod every day, and I MEAN EVERY DAY.

Ross take note! Ocean, estuary, river, mud crabs, bream, Spanish mackerel, flatties, whiting and on it goes. And that’s just what I caught (almost)!

Oh yes, and bait is virtually free, yabbies, white bait, pipis, clams, crabs, sand worm and the list goes on.

Boris, your pump would have collected hundreds of them in minutes.

We also saw 1000s of soldier crabs venturing the low tides.

This really was like a David Attenborough docco!

Day 159, Alva beach

The weather broke today and we actually had to pack! Everyone has been joking that we will end up leaving with them in early October!

The goodbyes took close to an hour and there were tears everywhere so we ended up leaving about 11am ( we joked that Doug would charge us another days stay as we were an hour late, I think he shed a tear as well and gave Kat another $20 for the Children’s hospital foundation fundraising.

After driving close to 400km from Mission beach, through Townsville (and buying a heater at Bunnings as its getting cold down south, Mission beach 18/28 to Diamond Creek 0/14) we now got to Alva beach.

It’s a bit weird setting the camper up after being in one place for 6 weeks.
When we were on the road, we could have our mobile home ready for action in about 30 mins, it took us over an hour. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!.

2 nights here and we will continue back to Mexico.

Complements

I decided after many years of trying to complement my beautiful wife on how good she looked, how fit she was, how smart she was and general positive things I see about her, I will try a new approach.

I was constantly being told that ‘you are just saying that’ even though I actually meant it and it was true.

The classic scenario of ‘Do I look to big in this’.
…..so, my new complement strategy…
It has been working a marvel!!

  • you have such beautiful skin, it’s everywhere, you have so much skin, I love it
  • I don’t want that young skinny girl, I have you
  • those aren’t new wrinkles, you have had them since we first met, you have always had that sort of smooth skin
  • no your butt isn’t really as big as you say, it’s proportional to the rest

And my life continues being very happy!

Day 158, another last day

We have been meaning to leave since last Saturday but the weather has been unfavorable with rain. Quite a few times we prayed for it as we have been having a magnificent time with so many new friends.

Chris Stevens held another concert and the girls put on a ‘Chicken dance show’.

Doug the caravan park manager gave them a swell introduction and mentioned their fundraising efforts.

We had strangers chipping in their donations from that point on!!

I have to say, I was incredibly proud.

We came to mission beach for 3 nights…. And stayed for close to 6 weeks. It is sad to know we have to leave.

PS. Thank you all who have donated to our cause.
