Mt Isa & Burke & Wills

DRAFT!!!!!

We went through Mt Isa, which was another mining town.

Once we refulled and got supplies we decided it wasnt a town for us, but we did see Katters official office..it explains a lot.

Tom Price was much more civilised, professional and nice.

As we werent going to stay at Mt Isa we decided to move on via the developmental road which turned off at Cloncurry.

Once we got on the road it was a really good road but you could tell it wass another increadibly isolated place.

We drove abot 400km untill we got to Burke & Wills, which is a ‘ one horse town’… one roadhouse and one rodeo stadium. We were there a couple of days before the rodeo was on, this town is literally in the midlle of nowhere, however there were trucks and cowboys flowing in by the dozen.

At the pub/caravan park/hotel/post office/bottleshop etc, we saw young men in their early 20s drinking XXXX and trying to impress the young ladies. At the same time we saw the young ladies (20+) trying to seduce their farmer, or more probably a Station owner. This was like a Farmer wants a wife/husband on Meth!.

We could not stay and had to move on, we stayed at the side of the road about 80km north of B&W.

Lovely free camp called ‘Bang Bang’. Some fantastic Street Art, I think Banksy might have driven through here.

Water in the site tank was green like from the ‘Simpsons’ lake

Kakadu-Cooktown 3rd freecamp, FO NBN Loud Gennis

DRAFT, This has to be waaaay updated!

Stayed another night on the side of the road. FREEE WooHoo!

2 sets of Grey nomads in their cashed up caravans. 1 with a Honda genni, the other with an ebay 3KV cheap crappy.

We drove next to them as they were on gravel, when we opened the car door the cheap one was pumping about 180dB, I am not kidding!, so we drove another 50m and set up.

The NBN fibre optic network is really increadibly amazing, literally in the middle of nowhere they had generators/air conditioners/solar panels running these stations.

It rained, and for the first time in about 100 days we were cold.

Big K climbed a mound of gravel and fell down, hurting her shoulder (nothing major), Small K came bolting to her assistance and to tell us. It was nice to see siblings actually genuinely caring for each other

Kakadu-Cooktown 2nd freecamp ferral cats

DRAFT, This has to be waaaay updated!

Stayed on side of road next to an old water bore.

Saw and heard feral cats at night, totally crazy, they were the size of Blue heelers.

Non eventfull night, just now getting tiring. Doing 500Km+ per day

Left Kakadu, 3000km to Cooktown

DRAFT, This has to be waaaay updated!

Past the 3 way Roadhouse.

I remeber back in 1992 it was a nice place run by nice people.

When we got there, the Gen Y (and I am not being an old fart judgmental prick (even though I obviously am)) 20 yr old girl with the crap Bali tattoos on both her arms was a bitch…..An elderley lady asked if she could leave a $10 deposit for a key in cash and get it back on her Visa and she went troppo!!! (Need to expand on this as well)

First overnight stop was on side of road, Katherine was not worth our time at this time.

After you have seen 20 gorges, another one becomes a chore, especially when you have to do 3K km.

Freecamping spot was busy as hell, there would have been about 30 caravans there. we had to squeeze in next to the road in the turn in lane.

That will teach us not to arrive at a free stop after 2pm!

We got there about 5.30pm

The grey nomads ususllu do 50-100 km a day, we are doing 500-700km a day!

Went to see Yellow waters.

Weather was bad so it wasnt worth the cost, $160 pp.

Jim Jim falls were closed.

Other falls were closed.

Billabong was accessibble via “Red Sea” crossings, so we gave it a miss.

Movie night  at CP.

Starting heavy rain, more rain, severe rain. Everyone was washed out.

I put the bed ends and awning up in the rain, thank Budha it was 30 degrees!

After dinner decided to fit the window, the best thing about these caravan park with Grey nomads is that everyone is sympathetic to your misfortune…..and….. all are willing to advise you on the best solution to your problem.  The window didn’t want to fit into the channel or over 2.5 hrs. I decided that only wine can solve my problem.

About 10 pm I decided if I don’t fit it now it will never fit.

With my Dutch courage in hand, it popped into place!
