Rundown…

Easter in Denham(shark bay) was really wonderful, we had perfect weather, caught fresh squid off the Denham jetty, got to feed the dolphins at Monkey Mia and watched some amazing marine wildlife. This has to be our favourite place to date.

Friday

Got to our caravan park in the mid afternoon, this was nice as we are used to getting there close to evening. Set up and went to the beach which fronts onto the CP.

Went for walk to Denham in the evening, amazing what a fishing town his is, they have several cleaning stations just off the Main Street.

It’s Good Friday. I don’t understand that, If they were going to crucify me, I would call it ‘A Really Crap Friday’.

Saturday

Beach. Weather is beautiful. Lots of sand castles.

As its Easter, we decided we will visit Monkey Mia dolphin resort on Tuesday as it will not be as busy ( the guy on the phone said they are insane over Easter).

Sunday

We went to little lagoon today, which isn’t that little. A perfect beach for the kids. Knee deep for about 100m and very warm.

We stayed there most of the day. I had a fish, but I reckon I had a better chance of catching a cold!

The facilities are fantastic with BBQs and toilets  10m from he beach.

We got to 4wd on the beach, it was ace. It is allowed over here and encouraged (with common sense).

Shark feeding at Denham aquarium.

Katya caught a squid at the jetty at night in about 30 seconds. She was overwhelmed. I lost a squid jig in the water in the same timeframe!

Monday

Beach most day. Went

Kayah caught a squid at our lucky jetty tonight. I got to eat it once we got home, salt & pepper squid……..yummy! Kids didn’t want any, woohoo!

Tuesday

Monkey Mia.

We went to Monkey Mia for the day. We left at 7am so we could see the first dolphin feed and hear the ranger give the info session.

There were 130 people for the feed, we made the right choice as over Easter they had over 400 for the morning fee.

We got to see 11 dolphins, as cute as they are, to me they looked like delicious fish!

Katya was chosen from the crowd to feed Piccolio the dolphin, and in a great surprise I got chosen to feed the dolphin as well. It wasn’t as much of a deal for me and I would have happily given the chance to Kay. As you can imagine Kay was gutted that she didn’t get chosen, but I think it was also a good life lesson.

We had a delicious lunch at the restaurant and went snorkelling near the jetty.

It was fascinating coming to this amazing place after 22 years. It had changed dramatically. When I was here last time, we camped and there were only very keen travellers and tourists, now it was caravan next to caravan, chalets, beachfront apartments and big boats.

It made me feel like the backpackers who visit the most remote places before hey get raped by tourists. I have to say though, they have managed and controlled it very well.

Day 54, River stop, WA

Wednesday 03/04/13

Dinner: Burgers

Top temp: 30 ish

Distance travelled: 400km (Denham-100km short of Tom Price )

Time taken: 5 hrs   (10.00 – 7.00pm),

Breaks: 1, side of road…no tails today

Side of road overnight stop

Cost: $0

Overall: good

Whinging score: 2

Highlights: Sleeping in a dry riverbed

Lowlights: Driving

Rundown…

Drive,drive, drive.

We decided we will try to make Tom Price today. We got to about 150 km from Tom and we started to lose light so we found a great little camping spot in a dry river bed. It was a designated stop with clean toilets and bins.

You can tell you are reaching mining country as most cars are now mining utes. The facilities are exceptional and the roads are perfect.

The drive was tiring and being in a riverbed was quite hot with no breeze. When these rivers are flowing they must be spectacular. They are massive.

There was another car camping but luckily they weren’t the talking type.
